Student Support Services

Introduction and Purpose

The Child Study Team is a group of professionals dedicated to assessing the needs of and providing services and accommodations for students with different learning styles and other needs at The Columbus Academy.

We hope to empower teachers, parents, administrators, and students with an understanding of the processes and procedures used by the Child Study Team. This website is intended to provide clear information regarding support services.

Vision Statement

The Child Study Team acknowledges and understands that students possess a variety of learning styles and needs and that they also develop at different rates. Our mission is to offer support through active intervention for students and consultation with faculty and families. Our ultimate goal is to foster independence in students, as they progress through this rigorous academic environment.

Support Services and Accommodations

The support services throughout Lower, Middle, and Upper School are provided based on each student’s specific level of need. More intensive services are offered in the Lower School with the emphasis on remediation and instruction. Ideally, these services gradually transition into those focusing on strategies for improving and enhancing skills. The goal is to foster academic independence and self-advocacy. Subject specific tutoring is not offered within the Child Study Team, except as it relates to overall skill development. In addition to levels of service, the nature and intensity of services will vary according to division.

Following the Child Study Team referral procedure and any necessary interventions, a team determination for placement of a student is made based on the degree of the student’s documented need, the availability of specialist(s), area, the motivation of the student to utilize services effectively, and degree of parental support. Child Study Team determinations do not determine contract decisions.
